Urban district of Taiz containing the ancient Qahirah Castle, the hilltop fortress that has defined the city's identity for centuries. The castle and surrounding district became military positions during the conflict, and the historic quarter took shelling damage across much of its architecture. This is the old heart of Taiz, and it absorbed some of the hardest fighting of the siege years. Walking around today means navigating rubble and reconstruction on streets that were active combat zones not long ago.
