Thamud is a remote northeastern district of Hadhramaut near the edge of the Rub' al Khali, named for and historically associated with the pre-Islamic Thamud civilization whose ruins dot this part of Arabia. Today it's a scattered tribal district with minimal population and no infrastructure whatsoever. The district was a reported transit zone for AQAP fighters and tribal armed groups throughout the civil war. Getting here under any circumstances is a logistical challenge requiring multiple tribal checkpoint crossings, and the security risk in this remote corner of Yemen is genuinely opaque. Not viable.
