Hidaybu is the main district of Socotra Island, home to Hadibo the island's only real town. The UAE occupied Socotra in 2018 without Yemeni government consent and has been building infrastructure and military facilities on the island, creating a complicated political situation. Civilian access to Socotra is currently restricted to those with official clearance or UAE-sanctioned travel, and the island's cultural distinctiveness doesn't translate to social openness for unknown foreign men.
