The H'Mông majority population here is traditional and matrilineal in many respects — social customs are distinct from lowland Vietnam and interactions with outsiders carry genuine curiosity. A fit, confident foreign man who shows real interest in local life — not just taking photos — stands out sharply from the Instagram tourist crowd. The economic gap is significant and the ratio of foreign men to local women is far better than in any city.
