Mang Thít is the brick kiln district of the Mekong Delta — hundreds of traditional conical kilns still fire along the Mang Thít River and the landscape is genuinely striking, which has recently drawn some Vietnamese travel photographers and urban tourists. That new trickle of internal Vietnamese tourism is starting to create small cafe and homestay infrastructure that didn't exist five years ago. The population is predominantly kiln workers and farming families, and the economic gap between a foreign man and locals here is as wide as anywhere in Vietnam — which cuts both ways. There's a base of curious, economically aspirational younger women starting to appear in the orbit of the new tourism, but the infrastructure is still too thin for this to be a real play.
