Gio Linh district sits just south of the former DMZ and has a raw historical weight to it — the Ben Hai River crossing and the old 17th parallel border zone are right here, and locals actually lived through or grew up with parents who lived through the war. Foreign men who come with genuine curiosity about that history get treated with real respect. The district is agricultural but not destitute, and the women here tend to be straightforward and less jaded than in commercial tourist areas. Novelty factor for a foreigner is extremely high.
