Cồn Cỏ is a small island district off the coast of Quảng Trị — one of the least-visited islands in Vietnam, with a population under 500. The island has a genuine frontier feel since it was heavily bombed during the war and is now being slowly developed for eco-tourism. As one of the only foreigners who's ever set foot there, you'll get genuine curiosity and hospitality that you don't find in commercialized beach areas. The ferry from Cửa Việt is infrequent, which keeps the crowds out entirely.
