Dong Xuan is remote highland territory where Ede and Bahnar communities still run traditional longhouse villages accessible to anyone willing to make the drive on rough roads. The central market in Dong Xuan town is one of the few places in Phu Yen where highland ethnic life is visible at street level without any tourist scaffolding around it. Foreign men who show up here with genuine interest and some effort at communication are so unusual they become memorable almost immediately.
