Chư Sê earned the title of Vietnam's pepper capital legitimately — at its peak, the area produced some of the most significant volumes of black pepper in Southeast Asia, and the town reflects that with better infrastructure than most Gia Lai district centers. The price bust hurt, but the town still has a real market, several guesthouses, restaurants, and a commercial Kinh Vietnamese population that's more outward-facing than deep highland communities. Farmers here have sold product to international buyers for decades, so the concept of foreigners with money is not alien.

There's no real social scene for a foreign man, but at least the basic logistics of staying and moving through are workable.
