Trùng Khánh has Bản Giốc, one of the widest waterfalls in Southeast Asia and one of the genuinely spectacular natural sites in Vietnam — it straddles the Chinese border with a curtain of water that's striking even if you've seen a lot of waterfalls. The tourist infrastructure along the approach road is the most developed in the entire province outside Cao Bằng city. The district is also the origin of hạt dẻ Trùng Khánh, chestnuts that are sold across northern Vietnam every autumn and are a real local identity marker. Still, the tourism here is almost entirely domestic Vietnamese and Chinese day-trippers — it doesn't translate into a social scene for a foreign man.

Trùng Khánh is worth a night purely for Bản Giốc waterfall at dawn before the tour buses arrive. The guesthouses and restaurants along the road to the falls are decent by rural Vietnam standards. The district town itself is a normal small Vietnamese market town with a chestnut economy. Foreigners are noticed and get friendly treatment from the hospitality businesses, but there's no real social scene — visitors come for the waterfall and leave.

Trùng Khánh draws significant domestic Vietnamese tourism for Bản Giốc waterfall, and that has created hotels and restaurants, but the social dynamic for a Western foreign man is flat. Most visitors are Vietnamese family groups and Chinese tourists on day excursions from Guangxi. The local population is Tày and Kinh farming communities. The tourist infrastructure here is aimed at getting people to the waterfall and back, not at creating any kind of evening social scene. See the falls, spend one night, continue on.
