Nguyên Bình is a western Cao Bằng district historically associated with French colonial silver mining at Tĩnh Túc — there are still remnants of that industrial era visible in the landscape. Today it's a quiet backwater with a small district town and scattered Dao and Mông villages in the hills around Phja Oắc mountain. The silver mining left, the social scene never arrived. There is nothing here for an outsider beyond serious mountain trekking.
