El Tocuyo was the first Spanish capital of Venezuela, founded in 1545, and has colonial architecture that survived a 1950 earthquake only in patches — it's historically significant in a way that's documented rather than felt walking the streets today. The town's economy has never fully recovered from that earthquake and the subsequent decades of economic marginalization.
