Khorezm Province and its capital Urgench sit on the edge of the old Silk Road and Khiva draws enough international tourists that the hospitality economy is real. Locals who work in and around the tourism industry have genuine international exposure, and the region's long history of trade culture gives it a pragmatic openness to outside connections. Foreign men here are rare enough to be genuinely interesting to people who've already seen enough tourists to not be intimidated by them.

Khorezm is remote — it's a long way from Tashkent and most visitors come specifically for Khiva's historic old city and then leave. The tourist infrastructure is decent around Khiva but the social environment outside of that is thoroughly traditional and family-governed. You'll get warmth and good hospitality, but it's hospitality in the formal Uzbek sense, not social openness. The region's isolation from the capital means it's been slower to absorb whatever social changes are happening in Tashkent.

The social environment outside of Khiva's tourist center is firmly conservative, and even within the tourist areas the hospitality is structured around family-appropriate norms. If you're looking for social outcomes rather than historic architecture, the ratio of effort to results here is rough.
