High score (8-10)
Pinedale's position at the edge of the Wind River Mountains makes it the access point for some of the most serious wilderness backpacking in Wyoming — the Winds attract hardcore outdoor people from across the country who are, by definition, not embedded in local social networks. NOLS also uses the area. The natural gas fields brought real money into the county, and Pinedale has better infrastructure than its isolation would predict, including a surprisingly good recreation center.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Pinedale is genuinely isolated — over 100 miles from the nearest city — but the Wind River Mountains access draws serious outdoor recreation visitors who are more varied than the local population. The natural gas industry created real county wealth and Pinedale has better amenities than its size suggests. The social world is still extremely small and the winter isolation is severe. The type of person who lives here permanently chose that intentionally, which means the community has a specific personality that either fits you or doesn't.
Lower score (below 6)
Pinedale is one of the most isolated county seats in the lower 48 states — 100-plus miles from the nearest city in any direction. The county has under 10,000 people and the social world in Pinedale is as small as its population of 2,000 suggests. The natural gas boom brought infrastructure and money but also skewed the workforce composition heavily male during peak extraction periods. An outsider here has access to spectacular wilderness but essentially no social scene, and the winter months are genuinely isolating.
