Whitman
6.5
High score (8-10)
Whitman County's Pullman is home to Washington State University, one of the major state research universities, and the result is that a modest Eastern Washington agricultural town of 35,000 is running a social environment shaped by 20,000 students, a significant international student presence, and a faculty that has lived all over the world. Pullman has a bar density per capita that rivals much larger cities because of the student population. The WSU Greek system and sports culture create open social events that aren't hard to enter. For a man who can operate in a college-town social environment, Pullman is one of the best social concentrations per square mile in rural Washington.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Whitman County outside of Pullman and its direct environs is pure Palouse wheat country with no social infrastructure. The student social world is real but skews very young and rotates every 4-5 years — the connections made here are often transient. The town of Colfax, the county seat, is a small agricultural community with a completely different character from Pullman. The WSU social scene follows the academic calendar, contracting significantly in summer.
Lower score (below 6)
Whitman County in summer when WSU is quiet is a very different place — Pullman empties and the underlying small-town Washington character reasserts itself. The permanent resident population is a mix of aging faculty, service workers, and farm families whose social world is not oriented toward meeting outsiders. Outside of the academic year, there's almost no social infrastructure beyond what a small college town retains when the students leave.
