Okanogan
7.5
High score (8-10)
Okanogan County is the largest county in Washington by area and covers a massive swath of the North Cascades and Okanogan Highlands — Omak and Okanogan are real small cities and the county has a significant Colville Tribal population that makes it more demographically diverse than most Eastern Washington counties. The Methow Valley in the western part of the county — Twisp and Winthrop — has become a legitimate arts and outdoor recreation destination drawing educated, adventurous people from Seattle who've built second homes and sometimes first homes there. Winthrop's fake Western-frontier aesthetic draws heavy tourist traffic and creates social mixing that doesn't happen in purely agricultural counties. If you're into the outdoors and have some cultural substance, the Methow Valley side of Okanogan County is a genuinely interesting play.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Okanogan County is huge and socially fragmented — the Methow Valley arts crowd, the Omak/Okanogan agricultural working class, and the Colville Tribal communities have almost no social overlap. You need to decide which micro-zone you're operating in. The county's remote location in north-central Washington means low infrastructure and limited access. Apple and cherry orchard workers create a large seasonal population that further fragments the social landscape seasonally.
Lower score (below 6)
Outside of the Methow Valley corridor, Okanogan County is economically stressed rural territory with significant poverty on both the reservation and in the Anglo agricultural communities. Omak has a rodeo reputation but limited social infrastructure for anything else. The geography is stunning but the distances are punishing — driving an hour between towns is common. Without specific community ties or outdoor reasons to be here, the county is socially inaccessible.
