Bristol
7.0
High score (8-10)
Bristol straddles the Virginia-Tennessee state line — State Street is literally the border. Bristol Motor Speedway (just across in Tennessee) defines the regional identity. The city has about 17,000 people on the Virginia side, post-industrial, struggling economically. The Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion festival brings some outside energy in September but the permanent social scene is thin.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Bristol's main claim is being the 'Birthplace of Country Music' — the famous 1927 Victor recordings happened here. The downtown State Street area has some restaurants and the train station area has been renovated. Small, conservative, economically challenged. Limited options for an outsider.
Lower score (below 6)
Bristol is post-industrial Appalachia split down the middle by a state line. The local economy is weak, the population is older, and the social scene is limited to a few bars downtown. An outsider with a strong profile has no way to express that advantage here.
