Rutherford
6.5
High score (8-10)
Murfreesboro is consistently one of the fastest-growing cities in Tennessee and Middle Tennessee State University's 22,000-plus students make it legitimately different from neighboring suburban counties — the city has developed its own restaurant and bar scene, multiple music venues, and a social infrastructure that doesn't depend on Nashville. The Battle of Stones River National Battlefield and downtown Murfreesboro's public square have real character. The population is young enough and the growth rapid enough that social networks haven't calcified the way they have in longer-established Tennessee cities. A foreign man here has more room to build social traction than in almost any other comparable Tennessee city.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Murfreesboro is growing fast enough that outsiders are normal and social networks are actively being built by newcomers — which is the main advantage for an outsider. MTSU's student population keeps the city demographically young. The downside is that Murfreesboro is still in Nashville's gravity well and the professional class tends to go to Nashville for anything serious. The city works better than its suburban reputation suggests.
Lower score (below 6)
Murfreesboro's growth has made it more accessible but it's still a conservative Nashville suburb where the social world at its core is organized through church and family. MTSU's presence is the main equalizer and without engaging that community the city is harder than its size suggests. The downtown scene is improving but still limited compared to Nashville.
