The tech and healthcare sectors have brought massive numbers of educated transplants who didn't grow up with tight local social networks, making Nashville's social world significantly less calcified than most Southern cities. For a well-presented foreign man, the gatekeeping in Nashville's nightlife scene is lower than in comparable cities. The city's growth has been relentless enough that newcomers are normal, not remarkable.

Nashville works for an outsider but the city's growth has created a two-speed social scene — the transplant professional class in East Nashville and the Gulch is open, the old-money Nashville social world in Belle Meade is not. Lower Broadway is tourist-heavy enough that connections made there rarely go anywhere lasting. The honky-tonk strip is great for a night out but the social opportunities that turn into something real happen in the neighborhoods. Still one of the better Southern cities for an outsider.
