Fayette
7.2
High score (8-10)
Fayette County is one of those Pennsylvania Appalachian counties that offers extremely cheap land and housing for someone who wants rural space and doesn't need local social infrastructure to thrive. Ohiopyle State Park in the county has some of the best white-water rafting in the eastern US and draws outdoor recreation crowds in summer.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Fayette County is Appalachian Pennsylvania with significant economic distress — Uniontown has high poverty rates and the opioid crisis hit the county hard. The county never recovered from the collapse of coal and coke operations. Some outdoor recreation economy exists around Ohiopyle but it's seasonal and doesn't change the county's fundamental social character.
Lower score (below 6)
Fayette County is one of the most economically distressed counties in western Pennsylvania. Uniontown's poverty rate is high, the social environment is stressed, and the remaining social fabric is composed of tight Appalachian family networks that have no use for outsiders. There's a reason people who grow up in Fayette County either stay permanently or leave permanently — there's no middle-ground social life for a newcomer to occupy.
