Astoria is one of the most interesting small cities in Oregon — a 19th-century Finnish and Scandinavian fishing settlement at the mouth of the Columbia River that cheap rent over the last decade turned into a landing spot for Portland artists and remote workers who genuinely changed the social fabric. The bar scene (Fort George Brewery is the anchor) punches well above what a city of 10,000 should have. The Portlandia-dropout crowd that landed here is less cliquish than Portland proper and more genuinely curious about new people.
