Lenoir
7.1
High score (8-10)
Kinston has had a genuine downtown revival driven by Vivian Howard's Chef and the Farmer restaurant (featured on PBS's A Chef's Life) and a growing craft brewing scene led by Mother Earth Brewing. The Global TransPark industrial complex is bringing new employment. The county is forty minutes from the coast and real estate is very cheap. Kinston is an honest example of a small Southern city doing the work.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Kinston's revival is real but still limited — the downtown has a handful of excellent restaurants and breweries but the overall social density is thin. The county is primarily working-class and agricultural outside of the downtown core. The demographic pool for dating is limited. Better than its reputation but not a destination.
Lower score (below 6)
Lenoir County has persistent economic challenges — the tobacco economy collapsed and recovery has been slow. Population is declining and many services have contracted. Kinston's revival is impressive for a city of its size but doesn't overcome the underlying social limitations. Limited as a social environment.
