Hyde County includes Ocracoke Island — one of the most unusual inhabited places on the East Coast, accessible only by ferry, with no chain stores, a herd of Spanish mustangs running free on the beach, and a genuine maritime history going back to Blackbeard. The village of Ocracoke is a real off-grid community with excellent fishing and a small, tight social scene that rewards regulars. If you have a boat and time, Ocracoke is an entirely different world. The mainland portion of Hyde County is irrelevant.

Ocracoke is the reason anyone knows about Hyde County, and it's seasonal — peak season is June through September. The island community is small and extremely tight-knit; outsiders are welcome as tourists but integration takes years. The ferry from Cedar Island or Swan Quarter is the only way in. Good summer destination, not a social base.
