Choteau sits directly on the Rocky Mountain Front — the dramatic escarpment where the Rockies rise abruptly from the Great Plains — and is the gateway to some of the best wilderness hunting in Montana, specifically for elk along the Front. The Egg Mountain fossil site near Choteau is one of the most important dinosaur nesting sites ever discovered, and paleontologists from Jack Horner's team at the Museum of the Rockies made their key finds here.

Choteau (pop. ~1,700) is the county seat of Teton County (pop. ~6,000) and is a straightforward agricultural service town with the paleontology tourism connection giving it slightly more cultural identity than similar Hi-Line towns. The Freezeout Lake Wildlife Management Area is one of the premier snow goose and waterfowl viewing sites in the US, drawing serious birders in March and October. The community is conservative and agricultural but connected enough to the state's outdoor-tourism circuit to be familiar with outside visitors. Great Falls is 50 miles south.
