The Missouri River Breaks just south of the county are among the most dramatic badlands terrain in the northern plains, drawing a small but dedicated hunting and photography crowd.

Chinook (pop. ~1,200) is the county seat and primary town, sitting on the high plains along the Milk River near the Canadian border. The county was the site of the last battle of the Nez Perce War in 1877, which created the Chief Joseph Battleground of the Bears Paw — a real historical site with a modest but genuine visitor circuit. Outside of the Fort Belknap community and agricultural families, there's limited social infrastructure. A man who can be self-directed and doesn't need an established scene can get by.
