Goodhue County has Red Wing — a small city on the Mississippi River bluffs with a legitimate downtown, the Red Wing Shoe Company headquarters, and the Prairie Island Dakota tribal casino (Treasure Island Resort) nearby. The historic St. James Hotel has been restored. The physical setting on the river bluffs is actually striking and draws visitors from the Cities. For a man who values history and river-town character, Red Wing is one of the better small cities in southern Minnesota.
