Venice Marina is a genuine destination for serious fishermen, and that culture creates social warmth toward men who participate in it. Fuel prices and fishing guide costs are lower here than accessing the same waters from other points.

Belle Chasse functions as a suburb of New Orleans (15 miles south) with petrochemical and naval employment, but the parish thins dramatically as you go south into the oil infrastructure and fishing communities. The Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse adds a military dimension. The lower half of the parish is below sea level behind levees, which creates a specific psychological relationship with flooding and hurricane risk. Functional as a base for the Belle Chasse area, very limited south of there.

Plaquemines Parish is a narrow strip of land that runs south from New Orleans into the Gulf of Mexico, most of it below sea level. Outside of Belle Chasse (which is basically a suburb), the parish has almost no social infrastructure — it's refineries, levees, fishing camps, and the occasional small community. The southern tip at Pilottown is accessible only by boat. The parish has some of the highest flood and storm surge risk in the country. Not a place to establish a social life.
