Hickman is a county seat of 2,200 in a county of 6,000 at the very southwestern tip of Kentucky — the Jackson Purchase area that's geographically cut off from the rest of the state by the Tennessee River. The Mississippi River location once made it important; now the county is one of the most economically depressed in western Kentucky. The population has been declining for decades and the social infrastructure is extremely thin. There's nothing here for an outsider socially.
