Winterset (pop ~5,200) is the county seat, birthplace of John Wayne and known for the Covered Bridges of Madison County. Tourists come through for the bridges and the John Wayne Museum but the permanent population is small, agricultural, and built around established community networks. Being 40 miles southwest of Des Moines means locals go north for real activity. The county's tourism identity does not translate into social opportunity for an outsider staying here.
