Dickinson County is Iowa's lake district — Okoboji and Spirit Lake are legitimate summer destinations drawing affluent Iowans from Des Moines and beyond. In July and August the energy is genuinely good with water sports, lakefront bars, and people in vacation mode from across the state. Completely seasonal though — by October it is a ghost town with under 17,000 permanent residents living through brutal Iowa winters. Summer only, and even then you are competing with every Iowa guy who also made the trip up.
