Orofino sits on the Clearwater River in the northern Rockies and serves as the county seat for a region tied to timber and the Dworshak Dam and reservoir. The dam project is one of the largest in the country and brought construction workers and engineers through in the 1970s — some stayed — which added a small non-native layer.
