Sandersville is the county seat of Washington County in central Georgia and is the world center of kaolin clay mining — the white clay used in paper, paint, ceramics, and pharmaceuticals is extracted here at industrial scale, and the county has produced more kaolin than almost anywhere on earth for over a century. The Kaolin Festival is a real local institution. But mining is not a social economy and the county of 20,000 has minimal infrastructure for an outsider.
