Rome is a rare mid-size Georgia city with its own economic identity — healthcare (Harbin Clinic, Floyd Medical Center), some light manufacturing, and Berry College just outside town. Berry College has one of the world's largest college campuses by land area (27,000+ acres of north Georgia woodland), which gives it an unusual physical scale relative to its 2,200 students. The downtown has a functional bar and restaurant strip along Broad Street. Not an exciting social scene by any measure but Rome works better than most comparably-sized Georgia cities for a foreign outsider who needs somewhere in northwest Georgia.
