SanJuan

High score (8-10)
Silverton has 600 permanent residents and one of the most dramatic town site settings in Colorado — 9,300 feet in the Animas River valley surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad brings day-trippers. Silverton Mountain ski area is extremely technical and requires guides, which self-selects for serious skiers who are interesting people.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
The county is too small to sustain any real social scene — 600 people is a neighborhood, not a town. The day-tripper influx via train gives it some seasonal animation but those visitors leave by afternoon. Summer hiking access is excellent.
Lower score (below 6)
The smallest-population county in Colorado — there is no social life here in any meaningful sense for an outsider. Even the seasonal worker population is tiny. Come for the scenery and the train, plan to sleep in Durango.
