Siskiyou
6.7
High score (8-10)
Siskiyou County has Mount Shasta — not the city in Shasta County but the actual 14,179-foot volcano — and the spiritual/outdoor community that has formed around it is genuinely internationally diverse and open. The Mount Shasta city community has attracted New Age practitioners, outdoor athletes, and alternative-lifestyle people from around the world, which makes it one of the more socially open small communities in rural Northern California for a foreign guy. The PCT hiker pass-through in summer also injects adventurous outsiders regularly.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Beyond Mount Shasta city, Siskiyou County is conservative rural Northern California — Yreka (the county seat), Weed, and Tulelake are agricultural and working-class communities with very different social culture from the Mount Shasta spiritual enclave. The county has about 44,000 people spread over a large geographic area. As a foreign guy, Mount Shasta city is your social target; the rest of the county offers little. The Oregon border proximity creates some back-and-forth with Ashland, OR, which has a more active social scene.
Lower score (below 6)
Outside of Mount Shasta city, Siskiyou County's social culture is conservative, local, and not interested in foreign novelty. Yreka and the valley towns have a ranching and timber identity that creates a specific social world you're not part of as an outsider. The economic struggles of the county are real — timber and agriculture have declined — and that creates social conservatism and insularity that's hard to penetrate.
