Monterey
6.9
High score (8-10)
Monterey County has several distinct social markets that work well for a strong foreign profile — Carmel-by-the-Sea's affluent arts crowd, Monterey's military officer community from the Naval Postgraduate School, and the agricultural wealth of the Salinas Valley. The NPS in Monterey draws international military officers who create a globally minded social environment that's rare in a coastal California city of this size. The outdoor and marine science culture is another strong angle.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
The Salinas Valley — which is most of the county by population — is a very different social world from the Monterey Peninsula. Salinas itself has serious gang issues and is heavily organized around its large Latino agricultural community. The Peninsula communities are wealthy, beautiful, and somewhat cliquey. As a foreign guy, you're landing in very different social realities depending on which part of the county you're in. The NPS military connection is the most reliably open social network.
Lower score (below 6)
Salinas is one of California's more dangerous cities and the social culture there is heavily organized around gang territories and ethnic community networks that actively exclude outsiders. The tourist economy on the Peninsula creates a lot of transience that doesn't convert to real social connection. Carmel's social scene is affluent but extremely age-skewed toward older retirees and second-home owners. If you don't have a specific entry point — military, marine science, wine industry — Monterey County is harder than it looks.
