Madera
7.3
High score (8-10)
Madera County has Yosemite Valley on its northern border, and the gateway communities and park workers create a transient, outdoors-oriented social layer that's open to interesting outsiders. Oakhurst is the main gateway town and has enough tourism infrastructure to create real social opportunities during the busy season. A foreign guy who works in the outdoor industry or is genuinely outdoors-competent has an easy in here.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
The city of Madera itself is working-class Central Valley with a large Latino population and the social dynamics of a midsized agricultural community. The Yosemite tourism economy in the north is a completely different world from the farm economy in the south. As a foreign guy, which part of the county you're in determines almost everything. The gateway tourism communities are more open; the valley floor agricultural communities are more closed.
Lower score (below 6)
Madera is one of the poorer counties in California and the city of Madera has real gang and crime issues that limit your comfortable social geography. The agricultural communities of the valley floor have very insular social networks organized around family and ethnic community. Outside of the Yosemite gateway corridor, the county offers almost nothing for an outsider looking to build a social life from scratch.
