NorthSlope
6.1
High score (8-10)
The Prudhoe Bay oil fields pay the highest wages of any non-remote-work job in Alaska and attract workers from across the country on two-week-on/two-week-off rotation schedules. That workforce is temporary and financially motivated, creating a transient professional community that socializes during rotations. Barrow/Utqiaġvik has the distinction of being the northernmost city in the US which gives it a genuine novelty factor for a certain type of traveler. The midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter are real cultural events in the Iñupiat community.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
North Slope is functionally two separate worlds: Barrow/Utqiaġvik (the predominantly Iñupiat community) and the Prudhoe Bay oil fields (the male-dominated industrial workforce). Those worlds don't interact much. Outsiders are welcome at the professional services level — ASRC (Arctic Slope Regional Corporation) offices, North Slope Borough government — but the actual social community of Utqiaġvik is built around Iñupiat family networks and subsistence activities. Oil field workers are largely contained to the industrial camps.
Lower score (below 6)
340 miles above the Arctic Circle, accessible only by air, with 65 days of polar night in winter and an almost entirely Iñupiat community — the North Slope offers essentially nothing for an outsider in social terms. The Prudhoe Bay oil workers live and work in sealed camps separate from the local community. Utqiaġvik itself is a real small city with modern infrastructure (thanks to North Slope Borough oil tax revenue) but the social world is fully closed to outside participation in any meaningful way.
