High score (8-10)
Dutch Harbor/Unalaska is famous from Deadliest Catch and has more infrastructure than any other Aleutian community — actual hotels, restaurants (the Grand Aleutian Hotel), and a functioning port that is the highest-tonnage fishing port in the entire United States. The scale of the fishing and processing operation means a real transient professional class of vessel operators, processing managers, and logistics people who rotate through. The Museum of the Aleutians has genuine historical depth (WWII Aleutian Campaign). For someone working in the commercial fishing supply chain, Dutch Harbor is actually functional.
Mid score (6-8) · Your profile
Unalaska/Dutch Harbor has about 4,500 people and is Alaska's biggest fishing hub, which gives it more economic activity and infrastructure than almost any community its size in the state. But the overwhelming majority of the population at any given time is male fishing industry workers, which creates one of the most skewed gender ratios of any American city. The permanent Unangax̂ community is separate from the transient worker population. Adak, on the western end of the census area, is a former Cold War naval base that's been largely abandoned — maybe 100 permanent residents.
Lower score (below 6)
The Deadliest Catch fame doesn't translate into social opportunity — Dutch Harbor's legendary gender imbalance (overwhelmingly male fishing crews, processors, and logistics workers) means women are extremely rare and the ones who are here know it. Adak is essentially a ghost town built for 6,000 soldiers with 100 people living in it. Both communities are hundreds of miles from anywhere by air and the weather is famously terrible. An outsider who's not in the fishing industry has no reason to be in the Aleutians West and would find no social traction if they were.
