Piriápolis is an older Argentine resort town with the 1930s-era Argentino Hotel at its center, drawing a crowd that skews more middle-class and relaxed than Punta del Este — which means less competition and a more approachable social scene during peak January and February. The beach fills up with Argentine families and couples who are already in vacation mode, and a foreign man from outside the region gets a genuine novelty bump in a town where the visitors are almost entirely from the Rio Plata area. The slower pace compared to PdE actually works in your favor for getting real conversations going. Better ratio than you might expect for what looks like a sleepy resort.
