Salinas has been a popular Atlantic coast resort since the early 20th century and has retained more of an authentic Uruguayan beach culture than some of the more developed towns. Argentine and Montevidean visitors mix well here and the relatively compact scale means social encounters happen organically. Being foreign in January-February is a natural conversation starter in a context where people are already vacation-open. The beach itself is reliable and the atmosphere genuine rather than commercial.
