Atlántida is the main resort town on Uruguay's Atlantic coast within an easy hour of Montevideo, which means it pulls in a solid mix of younger Uruguayans and Argentine tourists every January and February. The main strip near Avenida Artigas comes alive in summer and being foreign gives you a slight edge over local guys competing for the same attention. Eladio Dieste's Cristo Obrero church is a legitimate reason to be here year-round and makes a strong conversation opener with anyone who knows architecture. The beach culture is casual and the pace makes sustained interaction easy.
