Tokmak was a mid-size Ukrainian rail hub of around 30,000 people with the working-class economic character typical of Soviet-era transportation towns. It had the social infrastructure that comes with being a regional rail center — more movement, more outside contact, a real town center — and a foreign man here had a clear economic and social advantage over local men.
