Huliaipole is the birthplace of Nestor Makhno, the anarchist guerrilla commander who held off both the Bolsheviks and the White Army with a peasant army across this steppe territory in 1918-1921. That history gave the town an unusual identity for a small agricultural center, and pre-war it had a modest but real local cultural pride. A foreign man who knew the history got immediate respect and conversation.
