Ochakiv is a historic coastal city at the mouth of the Dnieper-Bug estuary where the Black Sea begins, and before the war it had a small-scale resort economy and fishing industry that gave it more character than any of the interior steppe towns. The 18th-century Ottoman fortress ruins are an actual physical landmark from the Russo-Turkish Wars — Catherine the Great's army took this fort in 1788. The coastal location, warmer temperatures, and Black Sea-facing orientation gave the city a distinctly more relaxed southern character. In better security circumstances this would be the most interesting destination in the entire region.
