Vuhledar was a small Ukrainian-built coal mining city of around 14,000 perched on a ridge in southwestern Donetsk Oblast. Pre-war it was notable for being a relatively new Soviet-era planned city built in the 1970s-80s with better housing quality than older mining towns, as well as a local coal mine that was still productive.

Vuhledar was a small city with limited social infrastructure — its population was too small to support much beyond basic services, and its position at the edge of the steppe gave it an isolated character. The ridge position that made it defensible militarily also made it remote from everything else.

Vuhledar became one of the most symbolically significant battles of the war in early 2023, when Russian forces suffered catastrophic armored vehicle losses attempting to capture the ridge city. Russian forces eventually captured it in late 2024 after months of fighting that leveled much of the city. It is now occupied and destroyed.
