Donets'ka

High score (8-10) · Your profile
Pre-2014 Donetsk was Ukraine's fourth-largest city with a genuine café and restaurant scene funded by the coal and steel wealth flowing through the Rinat Akhmetov business empire. Shakhtar Donetsk's European football campaigns brought real investment and a cosmopolitan layer to what was otherwise a heavy industrial city. The city had money and energy in a way that small Ukrainian cities did not.
Mid score (6-8)
Donetsk city was always marked by its Soviet industrial identity — Stalino was its name until 1961, which tells you something about the urban DNA. Even in the good years, it was a transactional city where connections mattered more than charm, and the eastern Ukrainian social reserve made it slower to open up to outsiders than western Ukrainian cities.
Lower score (below 6)
Donetsk city has been under Russian separatist control since April 2014 and has been administered as capital of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, now formally annexed by Russia. Ukrainian citizens cannot legally enter, and the city operates entirely under Russian law and security structures. This is occupied territory and completely inaccessible.
