Bakhmut (Artemivsk) was known before the war as a mid-sized city with an outsized wine and sparkling wine production industry — the Artwinery produced Cava-style sparkling wine that sold across Ukraine. The salt mines in the area and the local agricultural trade gave it a modest economy that sustained a real cafe culture on the central square.
