Krasnoperekopsk sits at the Isthmus of Perekop — the 5km-wide land bridge connecting Crimea to mainland Ukraine — which has been a military chokepoint since the Cossack and Ottoman wars of the 17th century. The district has a large titanium dioxide chemical plant and the North Crimean Canal that historically carried Dnipro river water into the arid peninsula. It's significant terrain historically, even if there's nothing scenic about it.

The district is essentially a gateway zone — flat salt marshes, the sulfurous Sivash lagoon (locally called the Putrid Sea for its hydrogen sulfide odor), and an industrial town. Before 2014 it was a transit area for people entering Crimea by road or rail from mainland Ukraine. Nobody stopped here by choice.
