Kirovske district in eastern Crimea sits between the wine-producing Sudak zone and the flat agricultural steppe — there are working vineyards here and a varied landscape in the foothills that is more interesting than the flat north. Before 2014 a traveler cutting across from Feodosia to Simferopol would pass through here and find roadside stalls selling local wine and produce at prices that made the southern coast look expensive.
